The Ultimate Long-Distance Moving Checklist for Chicago Residents

June 10, 2026·8 min read·By Genesis Relocations

Moving from Chicago to another state is a major life event that requires careful planning and organization. Whether you're relocating for a new job, family reasons, or simply a change of scenery, having a detailed checklist ensures nothing falls through the cracks during the chaos of a long-distance move.

8 Weeks Before Your Move

Start by researching and booking your moving company. The best long-distance movers in Chicago book up quickly, especially during peak season (May through September). Get at least three quotes, verify USDOT numbers, and read reviews from actual customers. Once you've chosen your mover, confirm your dates and get everything in writing.

Begin decluttering room by room. Long-distance moves are priced by weight or volume, so every item you eliminate saves money. Host a garage sale, donate to local charities, or sell items online. Be ruthless — if you haven't used it in a year, it probably doesn't need to make the trip.

6 Weeks Before Your Move

Start gathering important documents — medical records, school transcripts, financial records, and legal documents. These should travel with you personally, not on the moving truck. Contact your insurance company to understand coverage during transit and at your new address.

Notify important parties of your upcoming address change: employer, bank, credit cards, subscriptions, and the USPS. Set up mail forwarding through the post office at least two weeks before your move date.

4 Weeks Before Your Move

If you're packing yourself, start with rooms and items you use least — guest bedrooms, seasonal items, books, and decorative pieces. Label every box with its contents and destination room. Use a color-coding system for easy identification on delivery day.

Research your new area: find doctors, dentists, veterinarians, schools, and other essential services. Transfer prescriptions and obtain copies of medical records to bring with you.

2 Weeks Before Your Move

Confirm all details with your moving company — dates, times, addresses, and any special instructions. Prepare an essentials box that stays with you: medications, phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, and basic tools.

Defrost your freezer, drain water from hoses, and prepare appliances for transport. Disconnect and prepare electronics — take photos of cable configurations before unplugging anything.

Moving Week

Do a final walkthrough of your home. Check all closets, cabinets, the attic, basement, garage, and outdoor storage. It's easy to forget items in rarely-used spaces. Confirm utility disconnection dates and ensure services are set up at your new address.

On moving day, be present to answer questions and direct the crew. Do a final check after loading is complete. Get a copy of the inventory list and keep it with your important documents.

After You Arrive

Inspect your belongings as they're unloaded. Note any damage on the inventory sheet immediately. Unpack essentials first — bedding, kitchen basics, and bathroom supplies. Take your time with the rest; there's no rush to have everything perfect on day one.
